HOBI faculty to present at healthcare communications conference in September

ICCH Conference graphicTwo HOBI faculty members will share their research and expertise at the 20th International Conference on Communication in Healthcare, a leading international conference held at Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland from Sept. 5-9. The conference brings together healthcare researchers, teachers, practitioners and policy makers from around the globe to exchange ideas and research findings on outcomes of education, research and policy activities.

Stephanie Staras, Ph.D., an associate professor and director of HOBI’s Division of Health Outcomes & Implementation Science, will present “Training clinicians to recommend the HPV vaccine using a C-LEAR communication strategy.” Staras’ presentation is based on first-authored work from her 5-year, $2.9 million grant funded by the National Cancer Institute to evaluate a multi-level intervention to boost HPV vaccine rates among 11- and 12-year-olds in Florida. Carma Bylund, Ph.D., a professor and HOBI director of graduate education, collaborates with her on this work.

Staras has an established implementation science research program that focuses on understanding, developing, and implementing HPV vaccination interventions among adolescents in primary care settings. She also serves as director of Precision Public Health at the UF Clinical and Translational Science Institute (UF CTSI) and is a member of the UF Health Cancer Center.

Bylund, a behavioral scientist with international expertise in healthcare communication across the cancer continuum and in dementia, will give a presentation entitled “How do oncology clinicians respond to patients about cancer misinformation found online?” Additionally, Bylund will present on “Transitions of care in blood cancer: Exploring supportive care needs from treatment into survivorship.” Bylund’s research focuses on the development, implementation, and testing of communication interventions for clinicians, patients, and caregivers to improve health outcomes. She also serves as editor-in-chief of PEC Innovation and associate editor of Patient Education and Counseling.
