HOBI Professor Carma Bylund, Ph.D., has been named the department’s director of education. Matt Mitterko also joined the department in August as assistant director of education. Together, Bylund and Mitterko will oversee HOBI’s graduate education programs, including 2 PhDs, 2 Master’s, and 2 certificates. In these roles, they will also support professional development for students and graduate faculty.
Bylund joined the department last year as a faculty member in the Division of Health Outcomes and Implementation Science. She is a behavioral scientist with international expertise in healthcare communication across the cancer continuum and in dementia. Bylund’s research focuses on the development, implementation, and testing of communication interventions for clinicians, patients, and caregivers to improve health outcomes. She also serves as editor-in-chief of PEC Innovation and associate editor of Patient Education and Counseling.
“HOBI’s education programs offer students a unique opportunity to be mentored and trained in an interdisciplinary department. Students can focus on health outcomes, implementation science, and biomedical informatics—fields of study that are on the leading edge of health research. I am excited and honored to work with our faculty, staff and students as we continue to diversify our student population to include more women and minorities, and to strengthen our growing programs.”
Mitterko came to the department from UF’s Graduate School and brings over a decade of experience in recruitment and admissions, international collaboration, professional development, funding programs, strategic communications, and academic program policy. In addition to acting as the main touchpoint for HOBI graduate students, he will also contribute to strategic development of the department’s graduate programs.
