Michelle Cardel, Ph.D., M.S., R.D., has become a member of the National Academy of Sciences Roundtable on Obesity Solutions, and will be representing the department as well as WW International, Inc., in her new role as director of global clinical research & nutrition.
Established in 2014, the Roundtable on Obesity Solutions brings together representatives from the federal government, communities, business and industry, national non-profit organizations, health care, public health, education and academia to solve America’s obesity crisis.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity affects more than one in three adults, almost one of every five children from 2 to 19 years old, and one in four children in lower socioeconomic groups.
The roundtable’s 44 members meet four times a year to plan activities such as webinars, public workshops and publications to support coordinated, systems-oriented approaches to obesity solutions.
“I’m excited to be a part of this impactful group and to have the opportunity to work on this issue with national leaders who have such a wide range of interests and expertise related to obesity prevention and treatment,” Cardel said. Cardel is an obesity and nutrition scientist whose research focuses on developing healthy lifestyle interventions for youth affected by overweight and obesity.
