HOBI Faculty to Host “2018 Data Science in Health Informatics Summer Workshop”

Three faculty members in the Department of Health Outcomes & Biomedical Informatics will host a three-week data science workshop for visiting undergraduate students from China at the University of Florida from July 23-August 12.

The “2018 Data Science in Health Informatics Summer Workshop” will be led by Jiang Bian, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Health Outcomes & Biomedical Informatics, François Modave, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Health Outcomes & Biomedical Informatics, and Yi Guo, Ph.D., MSPH, assistant professor in the Department of Health Outcomes & Biomedical Informatics.

Through 11 two-hour lectures and hands-on labs, students interested in data and data analysis will learn how to design and implement computerized databases for data collection, perform basic queries, prepare data for analytical tasks, and understand basic data analytical skills.

“Data science is an interdisciplinary field about scientific methods, processes, and systems that are used to extract knowledge or insights from data in various forms,” said Bian. “It’s critical for students to understand and gain practical experience with the entire life cycle of data, from data collection to data analysis to the dissemination and archiving of valuable results.”
